Career Path

Guess the player from their career history.

Career Path challenges you to identify a mystery footballer by revealing their career one club at a time. Starting from the player's earliest professional club, you see the years they spent there, their number of appearances, and their goals scored. After each club is revealed, you can either make a guess or reveal the next club — but both options cost points.

The game rewards early recognition. If you can identify a player from just their first club, you'll earn maximum points. But if the early career doesn't ring any bells, each additional club gives you more information at the cost of your score. It's a constant tension between patience and confidence — do you guess now and risk being wrong, or wait for more clues and settle for fewer points?

With 167 unique career path challenges in the database, featuring legends, journeymen, and modern stars alike, every day offers a different puzzle. Some players have distinctive early careers that make them easy to spot; others have winding paths through multiple leagues that only true football historians would recognise.

How to Play

  1. First club appears. You see the player's earliest professional club, the years they played there, their appearances, and goals.
  2. Guess or reveal. You can either type a player name to guess, or press "Reveal Next Club" to see the next step in their career.
  3. Wrong guesses reveal automatically. If you guess incorrectly, the next club is revealed automatically (costing the same as a manual reveal).
  4. Keep going. More clubs are revealed one by one until you guess correctly or your score reaches 0.
  5. Loan markers. Loan spells are marked with "(Loan)" to help distinguish temporary moves from permanent transfers.

Strategy Tips

Pay attention to loan spells. Many top players had early loan moves that are distinctive. A young player loaned to a Championship club before making it big at a Premier League giant is a common pattern that narrows the field significantly.
Goal-to-appearance ratios matter. A player with 65 appearances and 29 goals at Roma is clearly an attacker having a strong spell — that combination of club and output can narrow your search considerably.
Youth clubs are telling. The first club often reveals the player's nationality or region. A career starting at Ajax suggests Dutch or South American players. A start at Barcelona's youth system points to Spanish or South American talent.
Don't guess too early on a hunch. Each wrong guess costs 3 points AND reveals the next club — the same cost as a manual reveal. If you're only 50% confident, it's the same price either way, but a wrong guess doesn't let you study the new information before guessing again.
Recognise journeyman patterns. Some players have 8-10 clubs in their career. If you see a player bouncing between mid-table clubs across multiple leagues, that narrows the field to a specific type of well-travelled player.
